Smile is a new minimally invasive technique that has a number of advantages compared to other laser vision correction procedures. While other procedures involve cutting a flap and using an excimer laser to remove corneal tissue, SMILE utilizes the VisuMax high-precision femtosecond laser to create a lenticule and access incision inside the intact cornea in a single step. Once the lenticule is removed the shape of the cornea is changed and the desired refraction is achieved.
Presbyond Laser Blended Vision (LBV)
LBV is a laser technique used to treat aging eyes or presbyopia.
Presbyopia is a condition associated with aging in which the eye exhibits a progressively diminished ability to focus on near objects. This is a normal part of aging and usually begins around the age of 40. The most common treatment for presbyopia is the use of multifocal’s or bifocals (glasses that feature two focal lengths).
Previously you may have heard that LASIK eye surgery cannot correct presbyopia, however, this new laser procedure (LBV) has been developed for treatment.
Laser Blended Vision is achieved through laser surgery. It works by increasing the depth of field of each eye through subtle changes in the optics of the corneal spherical aberration. The increase in depth of field allows for the eyes to be corrected in such a way that the dominant eye is set for distance and intermediate vision while the non-dominant eye sees best in the intermediate to near range. Because of the similarity in the visual performance of each eye in the intermediate range the brain is able to fuse the images between the eyes rendering a binocular visual environment.
Advantages of LBV
- Freedom from reading glasses – up to 98% of patients can read normally after LBV
- Be able to read the newspaper again – Over 99% of short-sighted patients and 94% of long-sighted are able to read standard newsprint
- The difference between eyes is reduced up to 1.2D
- Sustained effect for years to come
- Rapid recovery with very little discomfort
- 20 – 30 minute procedure
TransPRK – NO TOUCH advanced surface laser ablation, utilises the sophisticated Schwind Amaris laser system. With the TransPRK procedure the Schwind laser system ablates the corneal epithelium instead of manual or alcohol assisted debridement, this prevents the eye from coming into contact with any instruments and provides a no touch – all laser surface ablation in one single step. This advanced technology with 6-dimensional eye-tracking allows to treat difficult eyes that were previously not suitable for refractive surgery.
FsLasik – Femtosecond Lasik
FemtoLASIK may be regarded as the future of LASIK vision correction. What differentiates LASIK and FsLasik is the creation of the corneal flap. During the conventional LASIK procedure a corneal flap is created with a microkeratome blade while FemtoLASIK utilises the VisuMax femtosecond laser to create a blade free flap and an Excimer laser (Schwind Amaris or Zeiss MEL 80) to reshape the cornea. This makes FemtoLASIK a bladeless all-laser form of LASIK allowing for the most precise flaps combined with improved patient comfort by inducing minimal pressure on the cornea. The combination of these two leading lasers ensures that the JHB Eye Hospital has the most advanced and sophisticated laser eye surgery system around.
